Top New Heavy Songs of December 2022

December 16, 2022

Man, did December 2022 end with a (head)BANG! At the last minute, we received new, unexpected releases from bands like The Acacia Strain, Zeal & Ardor, and more. And it’s all included on this list of the best new heavy songs of December 2022.

This edition of NMM, is significantly shorter than those released earlier this year. Simply because new releases tend to slow down significantly in December. And because this edition is being released before the month is over. But how else can I bring you the best song of 2022 in a timely manner?

While this list of the top new heavy songs of December 2022 is short, don’t let that fool you into thinking there’s not plenty of new and noteworthy releases this month. Frankly, I probably could’ve wrote reviews for all the songs on this month’s playlist. Because there were still a solid group of uniquely and intensely heavy releases that I’m excited about. Like the cover of Imagine Dragons “Enemy” from HOSTAGE and Ifa. Or the beastly heavy new single from Pittsburgh’s own Fall of Babylon. And let’s not forget about Dan Brooklyn’s new album which is like one big masterpiece track, honestly.

Anyways you get the point.

As always, some songs and/or bands from this month’s playlist have also been added to some of my other playlists like Underground Metal and Metal Women

Since this month’s list is significantly shorter, you’ll be choosing your top 5 songs that you want to hear on our Best of 2022 List, instead of 10. Listen to my New Music Monthly playlist and check out the Monthly Highlights below for more details on some of these new and noteworthy releases. And don’t forget to vote for your favorite heavy new tracks of the month at the bottom of the page! Voting will end at 12am EST on December 23rd. The 5 songs with the most votes at that time will be added to our Best Songs of 2022 list at the end of the year.

NEW HEAVY SONGS OF December 2022: MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS

“Winter” – White Lung

So this new album from White Lung caught me by surprise. I’m new to the band, but was instantly hooked by their energic vibe and hypnotic riffs. Much like how I feel like we’re experiencing a new wave of thrash, I’m also loving this 90s heavy music revival we’ve been hearing with bands like Narrow Head and now White Lung. And that’s exactly what you’re getting with this new track. I had a few favorites from their new album, Premonition. But I ultimately chose “Winter” because I think it encompasses everything you’ll hear on the album. This one gives off some goth, punk, and alt rock elements that are absolutely electrifying. And it’s also full of that magnetic high energy I was talking about earlier. Listen to White Lung’s Premonition on these platforms.

Oh, and since this song is called “Winter”, you know I had to my Winter Metal playlist. Headbang to that here

“The Echoing Habitat” – The Second Fovea

“The Echoing Habitat” immediately caught my ear with its dark, heavy, and alluring instrumentals. And as this new single from The Second Fovea goes on, it builds into an intense, pulse pounding banger. The band also sends a powerful message in this song about the importance of protecting our oceans. Or rather, what happens when we don’t. This theme is driven home by the visuals of official lyric video. Watch it below.

“Dancing In The Dark” – Beyond The Black

Powerful and empowering are the first two words that come to mind for “Dancing In The Dark”. This new Beyond The Black track, to me, is the musical embodiment of the eternal flame concept. It’s an unstoppable, otherworldly force that can’t be extinguished. And that’s the feel you get from this song. This song is the fourth and final single from Beyond The Black’s upcoming album which drops on January 13th. Pre-order or pre-save it here.
