Rich Trevino: 5 Songs That Made Me A Metalhead

March 5, 2021

Rich Trevino is doing his part to spread the love for heavy music with The Richie T. Podcast on Spotify. When tuning in, you’ll hear a bunch of rock and metal, both classic and modern, and no episode is the same as the last. One of the best things about this podcast, though, is how relatable it is. Rich provides insight from a fan’s perspective. In each episode he discusses a range of topics that any metalhead could relate to, including his top 20 bass players, concert experiences, and even things like his top 10 favorite horror movies of all time.

This week Rich Trevino tells us the 5 songs that made him a metalhead. Make sure to get the full experience by listening along to the corresponding episode of my new podcast here on Spotify.

1. Anthrax – “I’m The Man”

“The year was 1987 going into 1988. I was hanging out with some friends at my house and listening to whatever was on the radio at the time. My friend Juan’s older brother showed up with a cassette tape of Anthrax. I did not know who they were at the time but I remember laughing at first because the rap itself was funny. But when I heard the main riff of the guitar, I was hooked. So began my metal Journey!”

2. Metallica – “One”

2. “When I saw the video for “One” is when I became a Metallica fan! Sitting at home watching Headbangers Ball I remember watching it and thinking it was the scariest thing I saw. But the music was so heavy and good, I looked past the images from the video and focused on the band. I became a Metallica fan for life.”

3. Slayer – “War Ensemble”

“That’s the first time I’ve heard or seen Slayer ever! This song is the definition of speed and/or thrash metal! The energy was off the chain! It made me want to start a war LOL! I was just so impressed with the speed in the technicality of all the members of the band! It made me want to pick up an instrument.”

4. Sepultura – “Territory”

“Being a Hispanic American I found common ground with this band! They opened my eyes and ears to a different way of playing metal music. Once again Headbangers Ball was the first to expose me to this band! The video for “Territory” was and still is a very real life story going on in the world today! Sepultura opened my eyes to the world and what is out there can be either fun or truthfully scary!”

5. Pantera – “Cowboys From Hell”

“Last but not least the mighty Pantera! I credit my friends for exposing me to them back in 1990! This song was the beginning of a lifelong party! Being from Texas myself I was very proud to have a band from my backyard that didn’t sound like everyone else! It was groovy and heavy at the same time. Pantera made me proud of where I come from and proud to be a metalhead! And my metal journey still continues today!”
