I’m a firm believer that we’re in an exciting time for music, especially new unsigned bands.
When I was growing up, there was a small venue that frequently held shows supporting locals bands, and it was the one thing I always looked forward to. Unfortunately, that venue ended up being sold and turned into an under 21 dance club, causing my friends and I to travel at least an hour to support the unsigned bands we loved and pick up some CDs/merch in the process. Not only did this limit the amount of shows we could go to because we weren’t old enough to drive ourselves yet, but the performances themselves became very few and far between.
Nowadays, I can pop into one of the hashtags on Instagram or head over to YouTube and discover amazingly talented people creating awesome music from across the globe. This is something that 10 years ago we wouldn’t have even had access to like we do now. However, that can also be its own rabbit hole. Not to mention that thanks to Covid and the lack of live shows last year, we haven’t been able to see these smaller bands perform which is another way a lot of people like myself end up finding their music.
Because of this, I’ve started Unsigned & Unleashed as a way for us to discover new unsigned bands and the incredibly heavy new music they’re releasing.
New Unsigned Bands That You Need To Hear
Don’t forget to headbang with me on today’s episode of The Versatile Virgo Podcast, which is where you can hear the songs listed below. Starting today, each episode will also include a Mystery Bonus Track From The Past. Make sure to tune in to find out what it is and why we’re talking about it.
“Born Blind” – Anchors
Norwegian metalcore band Anchors is currently in the final stages of recording their debut album. “Born Blind” is the first single Anchors has dropped off of that, giving us our first look at what’s to come. There are some songs out there that when I hear them I instantly envision what the pit will be like. This is one of those songs. Between the sheer intensity of the song itself, and the insane vocals, “Born Blind” is a heavy hitter. Anchors’ debut album is set to be released this Summer. While we’re waiting for it to drop, you can keep jamming to Anchors on Spotify, Soundcloud, or on Youtube.
“The Great Persecution” – Mephobia
You may recognize Mephobia from a previous New Music Monday where I featured their single “Possession”. They have since returned with another heavy new single which comes from their upcoming debut album, Reign of the Degenerates. “The Great Persecution” is slightly different from Mephobia’s other songs though since it has more of a groove to it. There’s also a guitar solo in here that gives off a Pantera vibe which is super exciting to hear from a new band.
In regards to the new track, Mephobia says, “”The Great Persecution” about a sovereignty with the mission to purge this world from whatever they think is evil. Their rules must be followed and everyone who dares to stand against them shall be perished. Misguided by zealotry this movement does everything to reach their ultimate goal, the consummation of the world.” Reign of the Degenerates is set to be released on April 18th. In the meantime, you can pick up some Mephobia merch here on their bandcamp.
“Relentless” – Strike At Once
“Relentless” is my favorite track off of Bloom, the new EP from Finland’s Strike At Once. Bloom itself is full of bangers, but I really can’t stop listening to “Relentless”. With booming drums, explosively aggressive vocals, and thick, heavy riffs, this song really packs a punch. I also love the chorus on this song, which will have you banging your head and screaming along. You can listen to Bloom here on Spotify or on the band’s Youtube channel.
“Trial By Fire” – Tales We Tell
Las Vegas based, Tales We Tell, recently released their new EP, Songs of Tribulation, which is where you’ll find “Trial By Fire.” They have this great blend of harsh and clean vocals that makes this song super catchy, while still keeping it’s heaviness. The chorus will likely get stuck in your head and even on a first listen, you may already find yourself singing along. I know I was. “Trial By Fire” is a song that’s full of energy and there’s a really cool guitar solo in here towards the end that takes it that much further. You can listen to Songs of Tribulation here on Spotify or on the band’s Bandcamp page.
