NMM: New Music From System of a Down + more!

November 9, 2020

New Music Monday

Hello and Happy New Music Monday! Here’s to hoping this week is much more low stress than the last. In any case, I’ve got just the right playlist to help you with that! This week there is a total of 7 songs, the most we’ve ever done. There’s new music from System of a Down included here that’s supporting a really important cause. Instead of choosing just one, I felt it was important to include both. You can find the specific details below.

Before we get started, don’t forget that you can listen along with my Spotify playlist. All of these songs are lined up for you there so you can just hit play.

This Week’s Playlist: New Music From System of a Down & More!

1. “Protect The Land” and 2. “Genocidal Humanoidz” – System of a Down

If you grew up around the same time I did, new music from System of a Down is a pretty big deal. Last Friday, the band dropped “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz”. It’s the first new music from System of a Down in 15 years. Both of these songs are available for purchase on their Bandcamp page to help raise money for the innocent people affected by the current war in Artsakh. The band’s royalties from both tracks and their merch preorders are going towards the Armenia Fund. You can find more information and links to preorder, download, and donate here on the band’s website.

System of a Down wrote a very thoughtful and transparent post on their Instagram about this. Check it out below:

3. “Glory of Hel” – HJELVIK

HJELVIK’s new album ‘Welcome to Hel’ is set to be released on November 20th through Nuclear Blast. “Glory of Hel” is the third single they’ve released off of the new album so far, along with a new music video. From the second the song starts, it pretty hard not to move to it’s classic metal riff. The first scream then makes it come unleashed. It’s just all around a great track with a lot of classic elements that all metal fans will enjoy. It’s a really fun, adrenaline filled anthem that roars.

While you’re waiting for HJELVIK’s new album to be released, you can preorder it here.

4. “Inner Calm from Outer Storms” – Killer Be Killed

“Inner Calm from Outer Storms” sets the exact atmosphere Killer Be Killed describes in the title. It’s starts out with primal sounding drums before adding a low, dark bass line, guitar, and then vocals. The vocals start out a bit soft in the first verse (similar to Godsmack’s “Voodoo”), but then grow louder and more open. The song’s tempo and energy becomes heavier and more intense as it builds, until it eventually feels like you’re in the eye of the storm.

This song is the third single released from Killer Be Killed’s new album ‘Reluctant Hero’ due out on November 20 via Nuclear Blast. The album is available to preorder here in the meantime, but if I were you I would hurry. It’s selling out quick!

5. “Last Rites” – Alter Bridge

Alter Bridge has a way of putting out really great anthem style songs, and “Last Rites” is definitely one of them. Between the lyrics, the explosive instrumentals, and Myles Kennedy’s powerhouse vocals, this is a song that just makes you feel empowered. “Last Rites” is on Alter Bridge’s new EP ‘Walk The Sky 2.0’ which also includes 5 live tracks.

You can stream ‘Walk The Sky 2.0’ or order yourself a copy here.

6. “Examination” – Genus Ordinis Dei

Once I heard “Examination” the first time over the weekend, I immediately hit that little heart in Spotify’s bottom right corner. I just knew I had to feature it this week. Italy’s Genus Ordinis Dei may specialize in melodic death metal, but they’re level of heaviness also reminds me slightly of Lamb of God. Needless to say, I was hooked from the very beginning.

Genus Ordinis Dei are also set to drop a new album soon. While you wait, you can listen to or purchase their previous releases on the band’s website.

7. “Take Me There” – As Everything Unfolds

As Everything Unfolds is a new discovery for me, and boy am I glad I found them! The melodic post-hardcore band gives us a breath of fresh air with their new single “Take Me There”. It’s starts off very melodic, but then kicks it into high gear around the 1 minute mark with a combination of singing and screaming. Songs like this are actually what started to convert me into a metalhead many moons ago and discover more heavy music. If you have friends that aren’t necessarily into rock or metal but are willing to give it a shot, this is a great place to start.

There’s no word yet on if As Everything Unfolds will be dropping a new album, but make sure to give them a follow on Instagram so you don’t miss out on future releases. They do have some really awesome merch up for grabs though that you can pick up here.
