Connecticut based Currents just recently released their second album ‘The Way It Ends’ which follows their 2018 EP ‘I Let The Devil In’. They had actually released part of the album as an EP a few weeks ago and I had been jamming to that while anxiously awaiting for the rest of the tracks to drop.
This album is something that is much needed and really hit me in the chest on a personal level. While the metalcore genre continues grow with new bands, this album to me really highlights why Currents continues to stand out.
The first track on the album, “Never There,” sets a ghostly atmosphere with the guitar and intensifies it with absolutely gut wrenching lyrics and vocals. It then jumps directly into “A Flag To Wave” followed by “Poverty of Self.” Both of these anthems are seriously heavy, but “Poverty of Self” is really one of the stand out tracks on this album for me. It’s aggressive and really hits you in the face, while lyrically it addresses topics that are all to prevalent in our society today, especially in recent weeks.
That is followed by another one of my favorite tracks “Monsters” which completely explodes before taking a slight change of pace and mixing in clean vocals. This song in itself is a great example of how Currents can be really diverse, while sticking to their heavy roots. This continues throughout “Kill the Ache.”
“Let Me Leave” then takes a slower, more melodic turn but that doesn’t make it any less powerful. The album picks the pace and heaviness right back up though with “Origin,” “Split,” and “Second Skin.”
‘The Way It Ends’ begins to wind down after that with “How I Fall Apart.” This song paints a picture of the struggle with mental health, which is a theme throughout the album.
We then come full circle with the final track, “Better Days.” This was the perfect track to bring the album to a close as it balances all of themes and questions leading up to this point.
Currents did a fantastic job with this album and it is definitely worth listening to so if you haven’t heard it already, you should go check it out now! You can find it on streaming services like Spotify, but you can also purchase the CD and vinyl, as well as other merch here.
