Ways to Help Support the Black Lives Matter Movement

June 7, 2020

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here and for that I’m sorry. With all that has been going on in the United States, it just hasn’t really felt right to post about anything else and I wanted to leave room for other voices to be heard.

I’ve been more vocal on my Instagram account simply because I have a larger reach there at this time, but I also wanted to provide some information here that I’ve found on how you can help support the Black Lives Matter Movement.

George Floyd, an African American man, was murdered by police in Minneapolis, MN on May 25th. Video evidence showed Derek Chauvin, a White Minneapolis police officer, press his knee into George Floyd’s neck while Floyd, who was pinned to the ground and in handcuffs, repeated that he could not breathe. Eventually Floyd became unresponsive, but the officer continued to hold this position until the ambulance arrived. Three other officers, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng, were also involved and did nothing to intervene. George Floyd died later that evening.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident in America or in our world. It is, though, something that has been highly under reported by our media and has not been getting the attention it needs- at least until recently. Even just a few months prior to George Floyd’s death, we also learned about shootings leading to the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

And just before George Floyd’s death became a national headline, there was also the incident where bird watcher, Christian Cooper, had police called on him by a white woman after asking her to put her dog on a leash, in area of Central Park where dogs are not permitted. In the viral video, the woman can be seen and heard telling Cooper that she would tell police that an African American man was threatening her life, before she called 911.

Protests erupted after George Floyd’s death and are still going on. It is important that you realize that the vast majority of these protests have been peaceful. Unfortunately, there have also been some instances of property damage and looting with individuals taking advantage of the situation that are NOT out to support the cause.

Throughout this time, we have seen some true colors really show, from government leaders to retail store owners and online vendors.

It is dire that we continue to stand together and rise up for what it right. We must show our support and we cannot lose momentum.

I’ve included some links below that I’ve found helpful on ways that we can continue to help. I encourage you to review the resources provided by these organizations as well.

Keep spreading the word and keep saying their names. It is important that we not only educate ourselves, but also those around us. This is not a trend and will not go away until we see legitimate change.
