Why Forming the Void’s ‘Reverie’ Is The Best Album You Haven’t Heard Yet

June 11, 2020

Have you ever listened to an album for the first time that afterwards left you just sitting there wondering how you could possibly listen to anything else because there’s nothing that could even come close? I’m talking about an album that really blew your mind so much that afterwards you were just kind of left in a state of “well what the hell am I supposed to do now?”

I’ve always loved a variety of different types of music and there have always been albums that I felt were completely phenomenal so this isn’t to take away from that. However, this specific experience I’m talking about I’ve only had with a very small, select group of albums which includes Forming the Void’s new album ‘Reverie’.

This is the fourth album for the Louisiana based band which includes seven cosmically heavy tracks filled with psychedelic riffs. It kicks off with otherworldly vocals cascading across thick, booming drums and a sludgy guitar and bass in “Sage” which makes it the perfect opener for this album.

“Onward Through the Haze” then starts out with a slight change in pace before circling right back to that pounding, pulsing doom sound that Forming the Void has mastered, easily making it my favorite track on this release. I also really like to sing “Brother Atlas, GUIDE ME” at the top of my lungs. 😉

We then jump into another one of my favorite tracks, “Trace the Omen” which is yet another example of what makes Forming the Void truly standout. It’s trippy and mystical while gradually building up to a melodic yet still heavy climax.

“Manifest” is up next which may catch you by surprise at first with a subtle yet poetic sounding beginning, before jumping right back into the heaviness.

Things are then sped up a bit with the extremely catchy track “Electric Hive” which gives the album a perfect balance before winding down with “Ancient Satellite” and “The Ending Cometh”. Both of these tracks trudge through slow, heavy, and even grungy sounds but “Ancient Satellite” mixes that with melodies straight out of your astral travels.

Forming the Void’s pure musicianship is second to none and ‘Reverie’ is one of those albums that will engulf you even if you’re not familiar with the subgenres. You can stream their album now but you can also purchase the digital album, CD, and vinyl here.
