No matter where life has taken me, metal music has been my one constant throughout it all. While some may be under the assumption it’s only for people who are “angry”, the rest of us know that it can bring a sense of peace and even….JOY! *Cue shocked Pikachu face.* Fellow metalhead, Pav, talks more about exactly that in this week’s Fan Concert Diary. It all takes place in 2008 at a show for Machine Head and Metallica in Prague.
Fan Concert Diary #4: Machine Head & Metallica in Prague
2008 was the year when a lot of changes happened in my life. After my 6 year marriage had ended, I started thinking about moving to the United Kingdom. I had a few friends that lived there so I called them and told them I would be coming soon. Before I left my country though, I had to see a few gigs.
One of the my favorite gigs was Mnemic supporting Machine Head and Metallica before I left. It was the first gig ever at the brand new football stadium in the middle of the capital, Prague. I was like, “OK, I have to go very early as I want to be right in the front of the stage”. That never happened, of course, because I was a bit late. But I ended up in roughly the 10th row under the stage.
I knew of Mnemic before this gig but honestly I didn’t like them as much [live]. It seemed like the venue was too much for them. I can imagine them in a small venue, but not a stadium. After a few stage changes, Machine Fucking Head came on and everything had changed. Their power just blew me away…..moshpit after moshpit! It was the perfect opening for Metallica.
It’s been over 12 years now since that gig, and Metallica’s intro still gives me goosebumps. As usual, they played for two hours. After “Seek and Destroy”, they said, “thank you and we will see you soon”. I was like “NO keep playing please” and I realized I had tears in my eyes. But the tears were because I was a happy motherfucker…. free and HAPPY. Unfortunately, I’ve never found merchandise so I don’t even have a t-shirt from this gig.
