The iconic Motörhead album ‘Ace of Spades’ just recently turned 40 years old this past November. In honor of it’s anniversary, the album was re-released in a collector’s edition vinyl, as well as a box set. As a huge fan of Motörhead I knew I couldn’t pass up the 40th Anniversary ‘Ace of Spades’ vinyl.
I immediately preordered it and I was so happy when it arrived just before the holidays. Now that the end of the year craziness is over, I’m finally getting a chance to share the details of this really cool collector’s vinyl with you!
What’s So Special About This ‘Ace of Spades’ Vinyl?
This ‘Ace of Spades’ vinyl is a music collector’s dream! The product itself is essentially like a large picture book. It tells the story of how ‘Ace of Spades’ came to be through previously unpublished interviews. It also includes never before seen photos, original song lyrics, and other cool little Easter eggs throughout. This ‘Ace of Spades’ vinyl also comes with a double live album from a Motörhead concert at Whitla Hall in Belfast on December 23, 1981- which has never been released until now!
What Makes ‘Ace of Spades’ So Iconic?
You don’t necessarily have to be a metalhead in order to at least be familiar with the song ‘Ace of Spades’. As one of Motörhead’s most famous songs, it can be heard not only on rock and metal stations, but throughout mainstream media. This is especially true in recent years and it was even used in a major commercial for the auto industry here in the United States. Needless to say, even if you have no clue who Motörhead is, it’s a song you’d likely recognize once you heard it.
But when a song reaches this height of commercial success, it’s not uncommon for the other tracks on the record to get overshadowed. This is true no matter who the artist is. As time goes on, while we still may cherish these super successful songs, the other tracks may even start to feel dated. For example, instead of every day listening, you might only play them when you’re in the mood for 80s music. For the average listener, this is normal with most albums. ‘Ace of Spades’, however, is not just your typical album and therefore, it doesn’t have that problem.
While Motörhead’s ‘Ace of Spades’ is a classic, it’s also timeless. There is an undeniable, infectious energy on every track and not a moment is wasted. The album debuted a cleaner, clearer sound for the band, especially vocally, with the help of it’s producer, Vic Maile. Instead of making songs more complex or adding to them, he sought to simplify them. The result was 12 perfectly executed tracks, turning the album into a masterpiece.
