No Coffin’s All Life Must End [Review & Interview]

No Coffin Talks All Life Must End

Miami’s No Coffin makes their return this week with a brutally heavy new EP, All Life Must End. Coming in at full force, All Life Must End viciously and unrelentingly slams and thrashes. And just when you think it’s over, it creeps back in for one more track- a hauntingly heavy cover of Portishead’s “Over”.

No Coffin’s version of “Over” starts off with the euphoric- or rather dysphoric, atmosphere from the aftermath of the musical beatdown experienced in the 3 tracks prior. You know the end of Fight Club when Marla and The Narrator watch the buildings blow up around them while they hold hands? This is that moment. And you might think that’s something a thrash/hardcore/sludge crossover band would be afraid to tackle. Especially after the no holds barred style heaviness on the EP’s earlier bangers like “Fire Is The Cleanser”. But No Coffin doesn’t seem like a band that’s fearful. Instead, their energy on All Life Must End is that of the fearless.

I had the opportunity to chat with No Coffin bassist/vocalist Chip about All Life Must End, their upcoming shows, and more. Read our interview below:

VV: All Life Must End is absolutely brutal in every sense of the word. You guys also experimented with a change of pace in your cover of “Over”. What made you guys decide to cover that on this EP?

Chip: Wow! Thank you! On All Life Must End, the 3 tracks we wrote are slightly unrelenting. To close out the EP, we were looking for a song that was quiet, and had a lot of space. With “Over”, the way the riff repeats is very doomy, and the original vocal layout is full of builds and swells, which translated pretty easily into my capabilities. “Over” is a very quiet song until it isn’t, and still allows a lot of space. In comparison to the rest of the EP, its longer than all our songs put together, and flows really well with what we have written.

VV: I love when bands aren’t afraid to tackle a song that’s not necessarily originally done in the exact same genre like you guys did in this EP. Are there any other genres that inspire you when making music?

Chip: When we’re in writing mode, we all really try to avoid listening to anything on genre like metal, or hardcore, in fears that, all of that enters your head, and I might accidentally steal a riff or a lyric. As for other genres of music, as a band, we literally listen to everything. My favorite artist at the moment is MICHI from California that writes the slickest dream pop songs ever. That Olivia Rodrigo album fucking bangs. Jinn Dogg and FujiTrill (Overkill) are banging, that’s a Japanese rapper+producer combo. That new Ginger Root [that] came out recently, that rules too. We treat every New Music Friday like a holiday.

VV: What was the writing process like for All Life Must End?

Chip: This EP was literally a blast to write. All of us wrote a different song, and they all gel together so well. Our entire process was upended by quarantine, so we’ve literally altered the way we operate as a band. It’s weird. Things are a little strange in 2021.

VV: Not only are you releasing a new EP, but you also have a bunch of live shows coming up. What can fans expect at a No Coffin show, and which new song are you most excited to play live?

Chip: You can expect a quick set. No Coffin lives by a motto “Arrive, Raise Hell, Leave”. As a band, we are really excited to play “.45” live. It’ll be fun if we can get a whole room to chant “shoot!” fourteen times. If we do “Over,” I’m not sure what to expect from a crowd on that one.

No Coffin Band Members Left To Right: William Guevara (guitar), Joshua “Chip” Shomburg (bass/vocals), and Steffen Banas (drums/vocals).
