NMM: New Cane Hill & More!

November 2, 2020

New Music Monday

If you’ve been keeping up with me on my Instagram stories, you know narrowing down my top new music picks this week was tough. There was just so much seriously good music released. However, as we head into another crazy week, I found myself reaching for comfort in these new metal tracks the most. There’s a couple of bands in here who have been my long time favorites, like Cane Hill. But there are also bands in this list that are new discoveries for me, and they’ve already stolen my metal heart. So without further ado, let’s start this week off with a (head)bang! ๐Ÿ˜†

Donโ€™t forget that you can listen along with my Spotify playlist. All of these songs are lined up for you there so you can just hit play.

band

1. “The Triumph of King Freak (A Crypt of Preservation and Superstition) – Rob Zombie

If there was one thing that could make 2020 at least a little better, it would be new music from Rob Zombie. And man, did he deliver! This heavy yet trippy track is the first taste of his new album ‘The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy’. It’s not set to be released through Nuclear Blast until March 12, 2021, but you can preorder it here in the meantime.

2. “Winds of Slaughter” – Shrapnel

Thrash metallers Shrapnel just released their killer new track “Winds of Slaughter” through Spotify on October 30. You do NOT want to wait on this one though, because it’s only a two week exclusive release according to the band’s Facebook. This is a track that’s impossible not to headbang to. It’s also one that has incredible energy, the kind you can only get with quality thrash metal. This song also has an impeccable guitar solo, and screams that would make Riley Gale proud.

There’s no word yet on if Shrapnel will be dropping another album before the end of this year. However, you can still pick up their latest album ‘Palace For The Insane’ along with some merch and previous releases here.

3. “Strain” – Mors Subita

Finland’s Mors Subita just dropped their new album ‘Extinction Era’ which is where you’ll find this track. “Strain” is the brutally heavy song that I needed, not just this week, but this year. Its pure vocal aggression only further enhances the intensity brought in by the pounding drums and electrifying riffs.

There tends to be this stigma with metal that if it’s new music and also brutally heavy, that’s all it is. The actual musical ability just seems to get lost in the sauce with some critics who are still stuck in the 80s and 90s. This causes a lot of really good music to be overlooked. Luckily though, I’m a metal fan like you, not a critic, and I’m telling you this song is so much more than just brutal. As further evidence though, my husband, who likes heavy music but not always to the intensity that I do, overheard me playing this song. When it was over he looked at me, said “WHO was that?” and then threw up his horns. Mors Subita, you’ve gained at least 2 new fans. ๐Ÿ˜

‘Extinction Era’ is available everywhere now. You can give it a listen or pick up a physical copy through this link.

4. “Power of the High” – Cane Hill

As a HUGE Cane Hill fan, I’m super excited about their new single and video, “Power of the High”. Cane Hill is at their heaviest here, and they’re doing it REALLY well. However, these Louisiana boys really are becoming masters of their craft, and they’re so much more than just heavy. Musically, they’re extremely underrated virtuosos. Out of newer bands that could still be considered “emerging”, they’re by far one of my favorites and they just keep getting better.

Don’t believe me? Do yourself a favor and check out their acoustic EP, ‘Kill The Sun’. Then, do yourself another favor and listen to their other albums. I truly felt their 2018 full length album, ‘Too Far Gone’ was going to be the band’s masterpiece, but I think that was only the beginning- and I’m super fucking pumped about it.

Cane Hill released a bunch of cool merch as well, which even includes rolling papers. Grab yourself at least a little something here.

5. “Make It Violent” – Wake Up Hate

I purposely put “Make It Violent” in this playlist after Cane Hill because, not only do I love this song, but it reminds me VERY much of earlier Cane Hill. Specifically, it gives me that same dark and giddy energy I got from Cane Hill’s ‘(The New) Jesus’ when it was first released. This song just has a lot of cool stuff going on here, in addition to being completely hypnotic. Also, there’s a short guitar solo in here towards the end that is absolutely electrifying.

Wake Up Hate also announced they’re working on their first full length release which they’re planning to release in early 2021. In the meantime, you can help support Wake Up Hate by picking up some merch here or by signing up for their Patreon.

6. “Bottom of a Bottle” – Butcher Babies

Butcher Babies are another band I’ve been a very big fan of for a long time so when this song dropped, it immediately filled me with joy, especially since it’s their first new song in 3 years. It also instantly became my number one karaoke song this weekend, but that’s neither here nor there. ๐Ÿ˜‰

If there’s one thing you should know about vocalists Carla and Heidi, it’s that these badass babes can sing as good as they scream. It’s something they’ve played with throughout their discography, but this song in particular focuses on their clean vocals. Butcher Babies is also a band that I think at least has one song for every type of music fan, and “Bottom of a Bottle” further enforces that. If you’re a Halestorm fan, you will probably like this song.

Cane Hill Horns

Much like Cane Hill, if this is your first introduction to Butcher Babies, I highly recommend you check out their discography, especially “Mr. Slowdeath”. It was released prior to their debut album ‘Goliath’ so you won’t find it on Spotify, but it’s still up on their YouTube channel.

In celebration of the band’s 10 year anniversary, they’re also releasing a special edition “Blood Red Blend” wine in collaboration with Desert Rock Vineyards. You can pick up a bottle or one of their merch bundles here at their website.
