Mandatory Quarantine Listening: “Macro” by Jinjer

May 3, 2020

In order to keep my sanity during these crazy times we are living through, I’ve been making it a point to listen to different albums in their entirety. Some are those that I still can’t get enough of, even after listening to it 6.8 billion times, and others are new albums from artists that I am just discovering.

All of them having something very simple in common: if you haven’t listened to these albums, you need to do so RIGHT NOW.

Ukrainian metal band Jinjer released “Macro” in fall 2019 and it has been in my regular rotation ever since. Not only does this album deliver in terms of heaviness, but it really showcases the very talented Tatiana Shmayluk’s vocal ability which can be so beautifully peaceful and in the next second change to something viciously aggressive.

This album also really highlights Jinjer’s unique songwriting skills and technical ability which has me excited to see what’s to come from them in the future.

I don’t have rights to post their music here, but this album is available everywhere, including on Spotify.

Never listed to Jinjer and want to know what song you should start with?

Check out “On the Top.” Lyrically I think this song is easy for many of us to relate to and it’s really hard to not to want to sing with Tatiana at the top of your lungs when she says “nobody else will miss you there.” If you have friends that aren’t necessarily into metal but are willing to give Jinjer a shot, I would introduce them to this song or the song that I feel is the best one on the album.

What is the best song on this album you ask?

“Retrospection” is hands down my favorite song on the album. This song takes everything that I think makes this band AWESOME and wraps it all into one.
