I definitely became a metalhead in my preteen years. But that doesn’t necessarily mean I always felt represented as a female who loves metal music. As a Catholic school student living in an area where country music is sovereign, my metal discoveries at the time relied on what was put out by the media. There were definitely women in metal making a name for themselves and creating amazing music while I was growing up. Yet for some reason, they were rarely talked about.
Perhaps this is because society teaches us that women are supposed to “smile and be polite”. And metal doesn’t really fit into that box. Over the years this has started to change, but we still have a long way to go. Their contributions to the heavy music world are still overlooked far too often, even when it comes to trailblazers like Plasmatics vocalist, Wendy O. Williams.
March is Women’s History Month and I couldn’t think of a better time to honor the badass women in metal music who have had such an influence on me over the years. This year’s Women In Metal Spotify playlist features amazing female musicians on all instruments playing things like heavy metal, thrash, and everything in between. This playlist serves to honor their contributions to heavy music, and maybe show you that there are WAY more women in metal music than you think! Join me in celebrating the work of these amazing musicians, this month and beyond!
