Another year means another year of New Music Monthly! And man, did January start off strong! Between the new albums from Fit For A King and Shadow of Intent, + a bunch of solid single releases from other bands, January 2022 proved to be a good time to be a Deathcore fan. But if you’ve been here for a while, you know my list of the top new metal songs of January 2022 doesn’t stop with just Deathcore.
This month also had its fair share of heavy releases in other sub genres, like Matt Heafy’s new black metal project, Ibaraki, which is also included. Their new single is perfect for this time of year with its icy cold riffs, so you can find it on my Winter Metal playlist too, along with the latest Abbath single. Did I mention I can’t stop listening to “Dream Cull” and I’m lookin forward to the new album?! 🤘
And of course, I can’t wrap up this recap without mentioning the new Meshuggah track that all the ladies and djentlemen like myself have been waiting for!
Listen to my New Music Monthly playlist and check out the Monthly Highlights below for more details on some of these new and noteworthy releases. And don’t forget to vote for your favorite heavy new tracks of the month at the bottom of the page! Voting will end just before next month’s edition, at 12am EST on February 27th. The songs with the most votes at that time will be added to our Best Songs of 2022 list at the end of the year.
P.S. This year since I’m giving you way more songs to choose from each month, you’ll choose your top 10 favorite new songs, instead of just 5.

The band kicked off January by giving us a glimpse of what to expect with their latest single, “Mark The Moment.” Filled with soaring melodies, powerful vocals, and dreamy riffs, this song embodies a musical voyage that knows no bounds. In “Mark The Moment”, VASS-KATSIONIS effortlessly play between different tempos and styles, and they do this well. This single is exclusively available through Bandcamp and YouTube. “Shadow of Emeria” – Planeswalker
Planeswalker released their debut album, Tales of Magic, this month which is where you’ll find this track. Dark, mysterious, and full of wonder, “Shadow of Emeria” starts out with a slow, eerie but captivating allure before exploding into monstrously haunting and heavy instrumentals. Vocally, this song has everything from deep, death metal-style growls to clean, powerhouse harmonies and melodies. Full of battle-worthy strength, Planeswalker roars with triumphant power on “Shadow on Emeria”. Tales of Magic further explores this musical theme as it touches on the events, the lore, and the literal magic of Magic: The Gathering. Pick up a copy of the band’s new album or some Planeswalker merch here.
“The Tide” – Matrass
French quintet Matrass will release their new EP Inner Wars on February 18th. That’s where you’ll find their latest single, “The Tide”. This atmospheric anthem is emotionally charged with a sense of gloomy hopefulness and transcendence. The band says, “‘The Tide’ is about being present in the moment and about self-awareness. “The Tide” metaphorizes this coming and going between conscious presence and moments of ‘floating’ in our lives.” That’s what the band intended to convey with the single’s accompanying music video here on YouTube. Buy/stream “The Tide” on these platforms.
“Unto Us” – Kingseeker
“Unto Us” is one of the Kingseeker’s latest bangers. It comes from their newly released, debut album, Daily Reminders. This no holds barred style track is relentless from start to finish.
