Hello and Happy New Music Monday! It’s the beginning of my favorite month and we are now officially in Spooky Season! Because of that, I wanted to do something special this week. Today’s NMM features new music from all female fronted metal bands.
Metal at times can be a very male dominated world. There are some serious metal women out there, but they don’t always get as much airplay as they should. When I started The Versatile Virgo, one of the things that was really important to me was highlighting women in metal. This week, please join me in headbanging and perhaps even singing/screaming along with these seriously heavy ladies!
Don’t forget that you can listen along with my Spotify playlist. All of these songs are lined up for you there so all you’ll need to do is hit play.
New Music From Female Fronted Metal Bands
1. “Ava of Death” – Eleine
“Ava of Death” is the second single Eleine has dropped for their upcoming album, ‘Dancing In Hell’. Pounding drums, heavy riffs, and soaring vocals blend together perfectly in this must listen track. The Swedish symphonic metal band also dropped a music video for this track which you can watch here. ‘Dancing In Hell’ is due out on November 27th via Black Lodge Records. In the meantime, you can preorder the album and/or pick up some merch here.
2. “Crystal Lake” – Nightmare
Nightmare just released their new album ‘Aeternam’ through AFM Records which is where you’ll find this track. This song has a little bit of everything I love. The first minute and 20ish seconds of “Crystal Lake” sets an eerie, dark, and even vampiric atmosphere. Then, the power heavy metalers kick things into high gear. The powerful vocals on this song are just the icing on the cake. There’s also a killer guitar solo in here. Nightmare’s new album is available everywhere now. 3. “The Circle of Five” – Burning Witches
So I actually almost included this twice in my two past NMM posts, but I was saving it for this post I had been organizing behind the scenes. Not only is Burning Witches female fronted, but they are an all female Swiss heavy metal band that deserves your attention. “The Circle of Five” also features the band’s brand new guitarist, Larissa, who just joined the band a few weeks ago. There are so many great things going on with this song, but between just their musicianship and energy alone, I think it’s safe to say Burning Witches are a force to be reckoned with. Check out the video they released for this track here.
4. “We Are the Rejects” – Raven Black
“We Are the Rejects” comes off of Raven Black’s new album ‘The Key’. Raven Black fuses elements of showtunes with alternative metal, making this track both catchy and heavy. It slows way down for a breakdown about halfway through where vocalist, Raven, unleashes some deep growls. If you’ve ever seen Raven Black live, you also know that this musical style perfectly transitions to the stage and they put on one hell of a show. The performative energy that shines here is not just for this track, but for the band as a whole.
‘The Key’ is also a soundtrack to the band’s new comic book “We Came Across The Darkness”. It’s available everywhere now via WURMgroup. You can pick up ‘The Key’ along with some merch here.
5. “Holy Roller” – Spiritbox feat. Ryo Kinoshita
This song was actually featured on a previous NMM when it first came out in July. The version included in today’s playlist is a remixed version with Crystal Lake vocalist Ryo Kinoshita featured as a guest vocalist. It’s insanely heavy, incredibly catchy, and just an amazing song. “Holy Roller” is one of my favorite new songs of 2020 and I can’t wait for what’s next from Spiritbox. Their upcoming debut full length album, which is where you’ll find this track, isn’t due out until 2021. They did put out a music video for this remixed version though that you can watch while we wait.
