Bringer of Light unleash their inner “dark passengers” on Dexter…And the Code of Harry, their concept EP based on the hit show, Dexter. The band’s sophomore effort keeps things as brutal as the plot line in the Showtime series itself about a serial killer of serial killers.
It opens with the brutal “My Dark…Whatever”, which immediately sets the scene with its pulse pounding drums, chainsaw style guitars, and vicious vocal roars. And don’t worry, Bringer of Light takes the sheer musical brutality another step further in “Bonesaws and Baby Bottles”. Dexter…And the Code of Harry then closes things out with “I Kill Bad PPL”, a monstrously heavy finale that is sure to have you banging your head.
Bringer Of Light consists of Mike OB (of Eyes of Ares, ex-VIRAL guitarist) on vocals/lyrics, Brad TBOLT (of SPAWNDIE, formerly of Ring Of Scars) on guitars/bass/fx/songwriting, and Tanner Rage on drums/mixing.
Today, Mike OB and TBOLT share the 5 songs that made them metalheads. Keep reading to learn more about the early influences of this emerging metal band. And don’t forget to listen along with the 5 Songs That Made Me A Metalhead Spotify playlist here on Spotify!
5 Songs That Made Me A Metalhead: with Mike OB of Bringer Of Light
#1 “…And Justice For All” – Metallica
From 1988’s …And Justice For All
#2 “Aenima” – Tool
From 1996’s Aenima
Mike OB: “I have always seemed to get into bands late in their career. I didn’t know a lot of people listening to heavy music and found things on my own randomly, and then researched bands backwards through their album history. I got hooked as a teen with Metallica’s “…And Justice for All” and Tool’s “Aenima.”
#3 “My Last Serenade” – Killswitch Engage
From 2002’s Alive or Just Breathing
Mike OB: “Later in my 20s, I found heavier metal and metalcore and fell in love with bands like Killswitch Engage and the song “My Last Serenade”. I loved the heavier aggressive vocals mixed with melodic choruses. This transitioned into more extreme forms and genres of metal.
#4 “Eradication” – All Shall Perish
From 2006’s The Price of Existence
#5 “Bludgeoned to Death” – Suicide Silence
From 2008’s The Cleansing
Mike OB: “I went heavier and heavier into death metal and deathcore and found bands like All Shall Perish with songs like “Eradication” and Suicide Silence’s “Bludgeoned to Death”. Since then I’ve been stuck on deathcore and just can’t find anything too heavy or nasty for my taste. These picks developed my appreciation for heavy music. Newer honorable mentions that have influenced me and what I would ultimately like to write would be bands like Shadow of Intent, Whitechapel, Lorna Shore.. that’s the direction of my current obsession.”
5 Songs That Made Me A Metalhead: with TBOLT of Bringer Of Light
“For me, it’s more about albums and periods of time,” he says.
#1 “Come As You Are” – Nirvana
From 1994’s MTV Unplugged: Nirvana
TBOLT: “When I was a little kid, my family listened to country and classic rock. So this album, [and] “Come As You Are”, in particular, served as a gateway to rock and guitar music.”
#2 “One” – Metallica
From 1988’s …And Justice For All
TBOLT: “This album, [and] the song “One”, in particular, served as a really high point for me at about 14 years old. I learned most of the album on guitar and realized that I could get onstage and throw down really good guitar licks rather proficiently. The direction a lot of my musical tastes would go stemmed [from] here. The guitar lead work as well as the staccato, syncopated guitar/kick/snare work – really started to plug me into where I was headed with a passion.”
#3 “What Will Become” – Fear Factory
From 2001’s Digimortal
TBOLT: “Fear Factory really has been my go-to favorite band since right after this album was released. I love many of their albums, but this was my first exposure to them. Really tight prodution, and a lot of the morse-code guitar/kick/snare writing that I love. I think “Lynchpin” is the obvious choice, however, I really enjoy “What Will Become”. Lots of dynamics and FX all over the place. I could list 20 songs here, easily.“
#4 “My Curse” – Killswitch Engage
From 2006’s As Daylight Dies
TBOLT: “For several years, I listened to 3 or 4 Killswitch albums all the damn time. Excellent songwriting, aggressive riffs, and a ton of melody. You can’t go wrong. Music like this really helped me focus on more melodic writing, even though not a ton of that shows through in this style of music.”
#5 “The Purest Strain Of Hate” – Thy Art Is Murder
From 2013’s Hate
TBOLT: “I’ve really enjoyed several albums from Thy Art is Murder. I think this one is the one that really made me pay attention to them. There’s just so much raw aggression. And to top it off, these dudes are funny! Watching them live is a real treat.”
#6 [*Bonus Track* ] “A Living, Breathing, Piece Of Defecating Meat” – Cattle Decapitation”
From 2012’s Monolith of Inhumanity
TBOLT: “In the last year or so I’ve really gotten into Cattle Decapitation. The last 3 albums are just SO GOOD. Blast beats, crazy heavy stuff, vocals have a huge range within the confines of heavy music, [and] the production is top-notch. They’ve been a significant influence on my approach to writing recently.”
