Blood & Honey : A Cane Hill Inspired Cocktail

May 21, 2021

This cocktail inspired by Cane Hill’s song “Blood & Honey” is so refreshing that you’ll be craving it on those hot summer days. It’s also delicious enough that it can be made with or without alcohol. I’ll also be showing you two ways to serve this musically inspired drink.

Blood & Honey Cocktail

If there’s one thing you should know about Cane Hill, it’s that they’re a band that won’t be bound by any subgenres. It doesn’t matter if they’re releasing something acoustic such as their EP Kill The Sun, or something intensely heavy with songs like “Power of the High”. Cane Hill is always 100% their own and it’s just one of the reasons I’m a fan of their music. But of all the new songs they’ve released within this last year, “Blood & Honey” is my absolute favorite.

From the melodic, catchy chorus to the aggressive, in your face vocals and instrumentals blended in, this song showcases all of the things Cane Hill does so well. It even includes one of those sweet solos they tend to pepper in. I was immediately inspired by “Blood & Honey” from the first time I heard it. And with a name like “Blood & Honey” I thought, this has to be a cocktail right?

Cane Hill said recently that this is one of three songs the band will release that “detail the motions of heartbreak and your ability to make the best or the worst out of it.” This cocktail goes along with that sentiment, blending sweet and sour elements to capture that feeling.

Where To Listen To “Blood & Honey”

“Blood & Honey” comes off of Cane Hill’s upcoming EP, Krewe d’Amour: Volume 2. At the time of this writing the release date for this EP hasn’t been revealed yet. However, in the meantime “Blood & Honey” is available on all streaming platforms or watch the music video here.

How To Make Blood & Honey

Blood & Honey Garnish

“Blood & Honey” is my riff on the Prohibition era cocktail Bee’s Knees. Although, this drink is delicious whether you make it with or without alcohol. If you’re making the non-alcoholic version, simply leave out the gin. One of the main components is the honey syrup, which is made from equal parts honey and water.

The ingredients listed below will make one drink. To make multiple drinks at once, just multiply the ingredients that get added to the shaker and split it up when pouring. You will only have a small amount of liquid from the shaker and the remainder to fill your glass comes from the club soda.

Note: The honey syrup ingredients listed below will make enough for several drinks. Store leftovers covered in the fridge for no more than 2 weeks.

Refreshing Cocktail recipe with Honey

Honey Syrup Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 1/4 cup hot water

Shaker Ingredients

  • Juice from half a lemon
  • 2oz gin
  • .5oz honey syrup
  • Ice

Other Ingredients

  • Club soda
  • Grenadine
  • Red food coloring (optional* for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (optional* for garnish)

Directions

  1. Make the honey syrup by mixing the honey and hot water together in a bowl or glass measuring cup (for easy pouring). Set aside.
  2. In a shaker filled with ice, add in your honey syrup, lemon juice, and gin. Shake to fully combine.
  3. Pour into a rocks glass. Then fill up the remainder of the glass with club soda.
  4. Drizzle a small amount of grenadine into the drink, which should settle to the bottom. If you pour too much, the entire drink will turn red which will still taste good, but won’t give you the color contrast. The same will happen if you stir the drink.

How To Serve This Drink

Blood & Honey Alternate Serving Suggestion

I like to serve this “Blood & Honey” cocktail with either a lemon wedge or a blood drip rim. For the blood drip effect, mix 1/4 cup of honey with 1/2 tsp red food coloring in a bowl big enough to dip your glass in. This serving option can be kind of messy though so to minimize that, I recommend making this mixture enough in advance so that it has time to freeze.

Start by storing the honey mixture in the fridge for at least one hour, dip the rim of your glass in it, and then immediately freeze the glass for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours before pouring. As the glass starts to defrost, the blood drip will run. If you’re concerned about it being too messy, you can drizzle the mixture over the top of the inside of the glass. Just keep in mind the color of the drink will change once the liquid hits the blood drizzle.
