While I technically started cooking around the age of 15, the first thing I actually learned to make (and serve to other people) was these 3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles some years earlier. Over the past 15+ years, they have become a staple for my family and friends, especially for holidays.

For Christmas 2021, I even gave them as gifts considering it had been so long since my loved ones and I could enjoy them together. They’re always a big hit, but this delicious treat given as a surprise made them that much more special. So today, I’m showing you how to recreate that idea, along with giving you my highly coveted 3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles recipe.

By the way, if you’re making these for Valentine’s Day or Christmas, I highly recommend jamming to my playlists, Heavy Holiday and/or My Heavy Valentine while you do so. This recipe is easy but it does take a little TLC. Heavy music from bands like AC/DC, Type O Negative, and Judas Priest is sure to help smooth that process!

The Story Behind These 3 Ingredient

In my Catholic school years (particularly from 4th to 8th grade), we had A TON of bake sales. Which was great for us students, because we got to pop out of class for a few moments, pick up our favorite sweet treats, and head back to class where we would try to pay attention. But god knows the euphoria of sugary goodness was more what I was into. And it definitely made the class I was in more enjoyable!

There was a catch to this though.

If you didn’t get down to the bake sale early enough, all the REALLY good stuff was gone. Oreo Truffles, which were made by my friend’s mom, were always the first to go. They were just that freaking good. So good that, despite never cooking/baking/etc. a damn thing in my life minus something for an easy bake oven when I was probably about 5, I had to make them myself. I asked my friend, she asked her mom, and before I knew it I was at a sleepover learning how to make my dream dessert.

Valentine's Gift Idea: Oreo Truffles

However, when I say learning, I mean it was my best friend and I winging it with some basic directions we were given. “You crush the Oreos, mix them with regular cream cheese, dip them in chocolate, and then refrigerate them.” Simple enough right?

After much trial and error (and a lot of messes), I finally figured it out. And then proceeded to teach my brother, my husband, and now you! I’m sure this is not the exact same recipe that I was first introduced to because of trying so many different processes/methods/etc. But these 3 ingredient Oreo Truffles are certainly just as tasty and are relatively easy to make. They can still be a little messy and attention to detail is necessary. The delicious result at the end, though, makes it so worth it.

3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles Gift Idea

As I mentioned earlier, I’m a really big fan of making these for a gift. Sure, you can go out and buy fancy chocolates for your loved one. But you will probably spend more (especially on truffles) for way less volume. Plus in my experience, I think most people prefer something homemade over something super expensive. Because not only is a homemade gift thoughtful, but you took the time and effort to make it into a reality, which is truly something special.

So if you’re looking to turn this info a gift like I did, all you will need is:

  • Holiday Tins (which you can find at your local dollar store)
  • Baking Cups (to sit the truffles on/in inside the tin.

Important Tips Before Getting Started

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened before you add the Oreos in with it. This makes it easier to mix together.
  • If chopping the Oreos, be careful. You could also crush them with a food processor or even use a rolling pin. I have neither of those things currently, so I chop them with a knife. I highly recommend chopping one Oreo at a time instead of stacking them. Because as soon as the knife starts to hit the 2nd layer of the Oreo, it will start to slide around and you run the risk of cutting yourself if you’re not paying attention. Nothing to be afraid of, but pay attention.
  • Make sure the Oreos are finely chopped, or at least as close as possible. You’ll still want some of those bigger Oreo pieces, but not too big that they’re overtaking the rest of the cream cheese. You will be able to feel this when rolling the Oreo balls because it will be hard and change the consistency.
  • Don’t roll your truffles too big. If you’re unfamiliar with a standard size truffle, they should be about the size of a small ping pong ball.
  • This recipe utilizes a double boiler method for melting chocolate. When melting the chocolate chips in the double boiler, make sure the water is not touching the bottom of the glass bowl. This will cause the chocolate to burn, and nobody likes burnt chocolate.
  • When you are ready to dip the truffle ball into the chocolate, make sure you have everything you need. You will need to work very quickly so the chocolate doesn’t harden while you’re still working.

How To Make These 3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles

Overall I’d say this recipe is still relatively easy as long as you follow the steps accordingly. The toughest part, which I’m confident you can do, is evenly coating the chocolate onto the truffle. I cannot stress enough that you will need to work quickly on this part.

Will you feel like it’s your first day at the Lindt School of Master Chocolateering and they’re already giving you a test?! Probably, especially if it’s your first time making this. But when you actually do it and see your final product, you’ll realize that making fancy looking truffles isn’t as hard as it looks. And it gets easier and easier every time.

Storing These Truffles: Before, During, & After

Since this is meant to be a cold treat, they should at least be stored in the fridge in general. However, I wanted to note some specific things you’ll also see in the recipe.

When Making:

This recipe notes that you can store these in the fridge or freezer during the cooling process for the Oreo balls, and then again for the final product. I have always utilized my fridge for the entire process until this past Christmas when I didn’t have room. At that point, I decided I also liked the freezer method. For me, this is something I decide based on what storage space I have available. I would check that first before getting out all of the ingredients.

Storage After The Overnight Cooling/Resting Period

These truffles should be kept in the fridge unless they’re ready to be eaten. Store them in an airtight container, and you can still enjoy them for 3-4 days afterwards. (If they make it that long that is!)

3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles [Gift Idea!]

  • Author: Courtnee Gault – The Versatile Virgo
  • Yield: 18 1x

Description

These 3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles have become a staple for my family and friends, especially for the holidays. Give them as a gift, make them for your next party, or enjoy this as a sweet treat for one!

Ingredients

Scale

3 Ingredient Oreo Truffles:

  1. 18oz container of regular cream cheese, softened
  2. 1 cup chopped/crushed Oreos (plus about a tsp finely chopped Oreos for garnish*)
  3. 2 cups of semi sweet chocolate chips

Other Supplies:

  • Toothpicks (I just use one and remove them as I go through each of the truffles, before adding the top layer chocolate. However I recommend keeping multiple on hand just incase.
  • Parchment Paper
  • A baking sheet to store the Oreo truffles on in your fridge or freezer
  • A small pot (I used 3 QT.)
  • A glass bowl that will comfortable sit in the top of the pot for the double boiler step.

Other Gift Supplies:

  • Holiday tin(s)
  • Baking cups (to store the truffles on inside the tins)

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and crushed Oreos. Mix well to fully combine.
  3. Grab part of the Oreo mixture and roll it into a truffle-sized ball (roughly about the size of a ping pong ball or smaller). Place it on the baking sheet and repeat this process with the remaining mixture.
  4. Once all Oreo truffle balls are on the baking sheet, place them in the fridge or freezer for 1 hour.
  5. Before removing the truffle balls at the 1 hour mark, set up the double boiler: Grab a glass bowl that will comfortably sit in the top of a small pot. Fill the pot with just enough water so that’s it’s not touching the bottom of the bowl but still has the potential to boil. Set the bowl on top of the water filled pot, add your chocolate chips, and turn the heat to medium. Once the water in the pot is hot and starting to boil, the chocolate will begin to melt. This takes roughly about 10-15 minutes depending on your stove top, but make sure to keep an eye on it. You will also want to stir the chocolate frequently throughout the entire process so it does not burn. You can turn the heat down slightly if necessary once the chocolate has fully melted, but continue to stir to avoid hardening/burning.
  6. Just before the chocolate is fully melted, remove the Oreo truffles from the fridge/freezer. Set your toothpick(s) and finely chopped Oreo from garnish to the side, but close-by.
  7. Once the chocolate is fully melted, working quickly, stick the tooth pick in the first Oreo truffle ball and dip it into the chocolate, doing your best to evenly coat the bottom and sides. Do not leave the truffle in the chocolate too long or the ball mixture will start to fall apart. Continue this for the remaining truffles.
  8. Then, while still working quickly, take a small spoon and smooth the remaining chocolate over the tops of the truffles. While they’re still wet, garnish with finely crushed Oreos or even sanding sugar to add a pop of color if desired.
  9. Return them to the fridge to cool overnight or if storing them in your freezer, place them in the freezer for an hour and then move them to the fridge for overnight.

Notes

  • Makes 18 truffles total
