New Music Monday

Happy New Music Monday! This week our top 6 has a little bit of everything, including new progressive metal from Seas on the Moon. This playlist is also a bit dark and doom-y, making it a perfect match for the gloomy weather we’re having in the North East.

Before we get started, don’t forget that you can listen along with my Spotify playlist. It has all of these songs lined up for you so you can just hit play.

1. “Sanctuary” – Seas on the Moon feat. Lena Scissorhands

Progressive metal band Seas on the Moon have teamed up for the fifth time with Infected Rain’s Lena Scissorhands on their latest single “Sanctuary”. It’s the title track from the Moldovan band’s new EP, which includes the 4 prior collaborative tracks. Seas on the Moon also released a music video for this song which is just as dark and hypnotic as the song itself. You can listen to the new ‘Sanctuary’ EP here on Spotify, Apple Music, or purchase a digital copy here.

2. “A Throne Abandoned” – Green Druid

“A Throne Abandoned” is the latest single Green Druid has released off of their upcoming album ‘At The Maw of Ruin’. From the hauntingly heavy atmosphere it engulfs you in, to its grim, groovy, and psychedelic riffs mixed with booming drums, this song is a perfect example of why I love doom metal. There is a seamless blend of clean vocals and harsh growls throughout. Not to mention, Green Druid has absolutely nailed the pacing on this song. ‘At The Maw of Ruin’ will be out this Friday, December 4th. You can preorder a copy, including a signed CD, on Green Druid’s Bandcamp.

3. “A Bird and Its Feathers” – Palm Reader

Palm Reader just released their new album ‘Sleepless’ through Church Road Records which is where you’ll find “A Bird and Its Feathers”. Vocalist Josh Mckeown has said this song is about love, but it’s not necessarily a love song in the traditional sense. It explores the idea of love being a sickness, and also a cure. While it’s somber, it’s also really powerful, building as it continues. Palm Reader slightly reminds me of Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan on this track. It’s almost trippy, but with a darker spin. The band also released a performative based video for this song and it’s definitely worth checking out. ‘Sleepless’ is available everywhere now. You can pick up a copy of the album and some new merch here.

4. “Where Your Rotting Corpse Lie (W.Y.R.C.L) – Eleine

“Where Your Rotting Corpse Lie” comes off of Eleine’s new album ‘Dancing In Hell’. There is sometimes this misconception in metal that if something’s melodic, it’s not going to be as “heavy” as songs in the other subgenres. Eleine has already taken a sledgehammer to that idea, but this track is just another example. It booms throughout while simultaneously keeping the melodic elements. And as Madeleine Liljestam’s vocals soar to amazing heights, guitarist/growler Rikard Ekberg’s deep growls keep the balance. ‘Dancing in Hell’ is available now. You can grab a copy, including a collector’s edition bundle, here on Eleine’s bandcamp.

5. “The Watcher of All” – Psycroptic

“The Watcher of All” is the title extremely heavy title track from Psycroptic’s newly released EP. With it’s insane energy, this song is the definition of a banger. The Tasmanian extreme metallers also dropped a performative based video for this track that will have you moshing in your living room. ‘The Watcher of All’ EP and merch bundles can be ordered here.

6. “Fourpercent” – To Kill Achilles

Scotland’s To Kill Achilles recently dropped a music video for their heavy new single “Fourpercent”. It’s off of their upcoming album ‘Something To Remember Me By”, which is set to be released on February 5, 2021 through Arsing Empire. This beast of a track absolutely crushes with it’s brutally raw energy. In a statement on Instagram, To Kill Achilles said the new album tells the story of “a year in the life of a man who goes through absolute hell, to the point where he feels he must take his own life.”

They went on to say, “We hope this record can show that these feelings are normal, we hope it inspires anyone to look for help if they relate to our story and finally we hope if you see any similarities in our story in your loved ones, you’ll be the person to reach out to them. Suicide is preventable with a close support network, be that network for the people you love.” You can preorder ‘Something To Remember Me By” here.
