Happy Monday!
I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
You are going to see that this post is slightly different from my typical New Music Monday posts. I usually try to keep this between 3-5 new songs because it’s really important to me that I tell you about the new releases that I think are truly exceptional vs. just giving you a list of songs that were released in the heavy music world. Each week I carefully choose a select group of songs that I just enjoy jamming to and I hope that you do too.
There are 6 featured songs this week and that was after I narrowed down my initial list. I don’t know what happened, but there was a bunch of awesome new music released since last week’s post and I am loving every minute of it! On a personal level, the last couples of weeks have been a bit rough for me. Each of the tracks I listed below, while heavy and perhaps a bit dark, have brought so much peace into my life over the last few days and I really wanted to share all of these with you this week.
Without further ado, let’s work on making this week not suck with these brand new tracks. Don’t forget that you can listen along with my Spotify playlist which has each of these songs ready for you to jam to.
1. “Colossus” – Avatar
This is the latest single that Avatar has released off of their upcoming album ‘Hunter Gatherer’ which is due out on August 7th. I’m not going to lie, I have been anxiously waiting all weekend to tell you all about this new song. So much so that on Friday when it was released I almost broke down and made a post about it on my Instagram. This is by far my new favorite single release from Avatar. It’s really catchy, yet still has a dark and doomy vibe.
Avatar also released a music video as well which kind of reminds me of Alice in Chains’ “Get Born Again” video, but only slightly. I like the video, but after listening to the song on full blast multiple times before seeing it, I don’t think it does the song enough justice. That does not mean that the video is bad, it’s just not what I anticipated for how aggressive this song is. I do still think the video is worth watching. However, I would recommend you checking out the song first and then check out the video.
2. “God of Fire” – Fit For A King feat. Ryo Kinoshita
This is another song that I almost broke down and posted about on my Instagram this weekend because it is so incredibly heavy it deserves your attention NOW. When I first heard this song, I was just randomly listening to music and this stopped me dead in my tracks.
I know fans have been pining for new music from Fit For A King and they did not disappoint with this new single which features Ryo Kinoshita of Crystal Lake. ‘God of Fire’ is the first single released off of the metalcore band’s new album ‘The Path’ which is scheduled to be released on September 18th. Lyrically, it’s also perfectly fitting for the current state of our world. Can we just make this the official song for 2020 (at least so far)?
3. “The Killshot” – Kataklysm
Canadian death metal band Kataklysm just released this single off of their upcoming album due out on September 25th, ‘Unconquered.’ This intensly heavy track starts off with a smooth and melodic beginning, followed by a growl that unleashes an immediate change of pace. Lyrically, the song focuses on one’s plan to carry out revenge and pairs it with brutally aggressive instrumentals.
4. “Practice What You Preach” – Outline In Color
“Practice What You Preach” is off of Outline In Color’s newly released EP ‘Imposter Syndrome” which you can stream now. The post-hardcore quartet nicely blend aggressive verses with smooth, catchy choruses. They also released a performance based music video for this track and if you are seriously missing concerts like I am, it’s worth checking out.
5. “Evil Eye” – Valkyrie
“Evil Eye” definitely has a completely different sound than the songs above, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this isn’t a must listen because it is. This track will be on the band’s upcoming album ‘Fear’ which is set to be released on July 24th after a 5 year silence. It’s so cosmically groovy, the riffs are incredible, and it gives off a classic rock vibe. This is also a song that I think would be awesome when performed live just because of the atmosphere it gives.
6. “Bring You Down (Project Regeneration)” – Static X
Static X just released their album ‘Project Regeneration, Vol. 1’ which is the first new album from the band in 11 years and features some of Wayne Static’s final recordings. This song comes off of that release and gives us that classic Static X sound that fans crave. It has aggressive heaviness while still keeping a futuristic style groove. If you are a fan of Static X like me, you definitely need to check this one out.
