Norway’s Dark Delirium has been on a mission to bring you deeply heavy music since their inception in 2020. Last year, the band even released not just one, but two albums. In June 2021, the band released their debut record, Fallen. And just under 6 months later, Dark Delirium gave fans another monstrously heavy release to headbang to entitled, Sulphur.
Sulphur was my first introduction to Dark Delirium and I was immediately blown away. Living up to their name with this release, Dark Delirium delivers a dark and hauntingly heavy collection of bangers. The songs on Sulphur are brutal, ruthless, and roar with an intense, unforgettable energy. One of its standout tracks, “Familiar”, features soaring guitar solos that will put you in a trance.
Sulphur is an album that was made for the pit. And had I heard it before my album of the year list was complete, it likely would have been a contender. It’s that freaking good, so please don’t deprive yourself of this one.
Today, the members of Dark Delirium share with us the 5 songs that made them into the metalheads they are today. Keep reading to learn more about the early influences of this emerging metal band. And don’t forget to listen along with the 5 Songs That Made Me A Metalhead Spotify playlist here on Spotify! That’s where you’ll hear one of my favorite tracks from Dark Delirium’s Sulphur as well!
5 Songs That Made Me A Metalhead with Dark Delirium
“Beneath the Howling Stars” – Cradle of Filth
From 1998’s Cruelty & The Beast
Simeon Ekse, Guitar: “I don’t remember specifically what song made me a metalhead. My father used to blast a lot of different music when I was younger, everything from Scorpions, Europe, Bonnie Tyler to Rammstein, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. However, I do remember this song a lot. It was very different from the other metal music we used to listen to. The amount of different segments in the song made it feel like a story and [not] just a song. I’ve been a metalhead since a very young age, but Cradle of Filth – “Beneath the Howling Stars” is definitely one of the go to tracks [for me] as a child… and as [an] adult.”
“Enter Sandman” – Metallica
From 1991’s Metallica
Halvar Moen, Guitar: “I had an acoustic guitar with nylon strings and was bored of the clean sound. So I borrowed my uncle’s electric guitar, plugged it in, and tried to play some Metallica. As soon as I learned the main riff I could not stop playing it, and the music taste escalated quickly from there on!”
“Dimmu Borgir” – Dimmu Borgir
From 2010’s Abrahadabra
David Jakbob Ekse, Vocals: “My Brother, Simeon, showed me this song in the car when I was a little boy. [I] couldn’t get enough of the symphonic epicness! After that I dived deeper and deeper into the extreme metal scene. I’ve also started to really enjoy deathcore and that kind of heavy music. The way they twist and curl on the vocals is just so interesting!”
System of a Down/Sepultura
System of a Down’s “Toxicity” in the playlist – From 2001’s Toxicity
Daniel Bryne, Drums: “I can’t remember which song, but I was in the CD store listening to the Blade 2 soundtrack album. A friend of my big brother tapped my shoulder and handed me the Toxicity album, and said “this is the real good stuff”. I quickly agreed with him after a few tracks. [I] told my brother about it and he showed me Sepultura’s Chaos A.D., and that basically made my musical identity.”
“Black Dog” – Led Zeppelin
From 1971’s Led Zeppelin IV
Daniel Logi Thorsteinsson, Bass: “When looking around on YouTube when I was 10 I found it and thought it was the heaviest shit ever. So I went on a quest to find more music that was heavy and therefore, discovered metal. After that, I was addicted.”
